Hydraulic Oil Basics: What You Need To Know
Hydraulic oil — also called hydraulic fluid — is the lifeblood of any hydraulic system. It transfers power, protects critical components, and keeps machinery operating efficiently. Like motor oil, hydraulic fluid comes in a wide range of formulations: conventional mineral oil, full synthetic, semi-synthetic, glycol-based, water/glycol blends, and even near-pure water in certain applications. Understanding the differences helps you choose the right product for your equipment and environment.
How Hydraulic Oil Works
The primary function of hydraulic oil is power transfer. When force is applied to a non-compressible fluid — typically via a piston inside a cylinder — that force is transmitted through the system to produce movement or mechanical action elsewhere. For this reason, low compressibility is one of the most important properties a hydraulic fluid can have.
Beyond power transfer, hydraulic oil also serves a protective role, lubricating and shielding the internal components of hydraulic machinery from wear, corrosion, and heat.
Base Stocks: What Hydraulic Oil Is Made From
The base stock is the foundation of any hydraulic fluid formulation. Mineral oil has been the dominant base stock since the 1920s, largely replacing water in most applications. It outperforms water as a lubricant and remains functional across a wider temperature range — continuing to perform even when water would freeze or boil.
Water, however, is still used in fire-resistant hydraulic fluid formulations where that property is a priority.
Vegetable-based oils — most commonly canola and rapeseed — are another category worth noting. Their appeal lies in being both renewable and biodegradable, making them a preferred choice in environmentally sensitive applications.
Specialty Hydraulic Fluids
Some operating environments demand hydraulic fluids with specific performance characteristics that standard mineral oils simply cannot deliver. High-temperature resistance, fire resistance, and extreme-pressure stability are among the properties that may be required. In these cases, formulators turn to specialty base stocks such as esters, silicone oils, propylene glycol, and other synthetic compounds engineered to perform under demanding conditions.
Biodegradable Hydraulic Oils
Industries such as agriculture, forestry, and marine operations frequently require biodegradable hydraulic fluids. In these environments, a fluid leak or spill that contaminates soil or water can have serious ecological and regulatory consequences. Biodegradable hydraulic oils are formulated to break down naturally over time, minimizing environmental impact without sacrificing the performance the equipment requires.
