What is Tractor Hydraulic Fluid?

Did you know that hydraulic fluids for tractors are NOT the same as other hydraulic oils? It's crucial to understand this distinction if you want to keep your tractor running smoothly and efficiently. Many operators make the mistake of reaching for that extra pail of hydraulic fluid or "303" fluid they have lying around in their shop, thinking it will do the job just fine. However, using these generic fluids can lead to serious issues.

Tractor hydraulic fluids are specifically formulated to fulfill multiple functions such as transmissions, differentials, final drives, hydraulics, PTO's, power steering, and wet brakes. The unique blend of additives in tractor-specific hydraulic fluids ensures optimal performance under various conditions, which is something that standard hydraulic oils simply cannot match.

Tractor hydraulic fluids have several different names, but they all mean the same thing. You may hear "torque converter fluid,"  "UTTO," which means "universal tractor transmission oils," "tractor hydraulic oil," "UDT," which means "universal dynamic tractor oil," as well as a few others.

Many different companies make universal tractor hydraulic fluids that will work for most farm and industrial tractors.  Always check your owner's manual or call the dealer for the correct specification.  You can also check the THF specifications to see if your tractor is listed as compatible.

THF comes in different formulations. Some of the choices offered by Schaeffer Manufacturing include biodegradable for environmentally sensitive areas, low-viscosity for colder/winter applications, conventional and semi-synthetic.

Using any fluid labeled "303" can damage your equipment! Before 1974 John Deere manufactured and sold a THF called "JD 303". John Deere discontinued production, and the 303 designation has been obsolete for over 40 years. Some lubricant manufacturers and sellers have been producing and selling THF as "303" in bright yellow buckets.  We have all seen them stacked up in a prominent place at the various farm and manufacturing supply stores at a great price. This 303 THF usually fails to meet any manufacturer's specifications, and it is made with inferior components and is not appropriate for use as a tractor hydraulic fluid. These mislabeled 303 fluids can cause harm, increased wear, and damage to your equipment. Several states bring ongoing pending lawsuits against these product manufacturers and sellers. That $29 pail is a lousy investment.

No matter what color/brand your tractor is, purchasing and using a high-quality THF will provide you with many benefits. Some of these are reduced operating temperatures, reduced system wear, and tear, increased operating efficiency, and potentially longer service intervals.
