A Message to Consumers When Changing To Synthetic Oils
Message to Consumers When Changing Brands of Engine Oils
Question:
Why is my engine consuming more oil when I switched brands of synthetic oil?
Under normal conditions engines use a certain amount of oil if they are running properly. Whether they are diesel or gas oil consumption is normal and varies from each vehicle depending on loading and driving conditions, maintenance and engine design. The causes of oil consumption in a normal engine can be related to two possibilities if there is no detectable engine leak.
- Oil can be consumed through the upstroke of the pistons because of a thin oil film that gets sucked by the rings. This is caused when there is a high negative pressure when the vehicle is decelerating. This small amount of oil is burned in the combustion chamber.
- Some oil can also be lost through the engine valves. Because there is a vacuum created in the air intake valve some oil can enter the combustion chamber this way. This small amount of oil is burned in the combustion chamber.
Engine oil consumption is normal and varies for each manufacturer’s equipment. Manufacturers can provide you with a guideline on acceptable oil consumption rates for each of their engines. My next blog article will more deeply explore the usage of Schaeffer oil whether in a new engine or switching a used motor over to Schaeffer oil and what to expect.
