A Layman’s Recommendations For Practical Storage of Grease Products by stores.buy1oils.com
Think of grease like it is a food item. You wouldn’t store food close to anything producing heat or hot steam, would you? If you have food leftovers, they most likely would be placed in a sealed container and stored back in a cool, dry place, right? Well, the same goes for greases.
Grease needs to be stored in a cool, dry place because of its chemical makeup. Grease is made up of base oils (other ingredients too) blended with a thickener that is much like a sponge but not quite. When the thickener is squeezed, it releases the base oil, or if the grease is introduced to heat, the thickener shrinks back and releases the oil. This is why storing grease near any kind of heat will result in oil separation.
Let’s say you store your grease correctly, but there do exist other factors to consider too. You may store them in an industrial location near a railroad system that constantly gets a jiggling effect or near a freeway where the same can be said. Since grease has a shelf life partly because of gravity, which places a consistent squeeze on the thickening system, the oil will separate over time. This process of separation is accentuated when jiggled. An equally poor storage location is inside a service vehicle that travels over the roadways.
Always be mindful of the surroundings and not only the dryness or storage temperatures to have the best success with your purchased greases. There has been much written about grease storage by all the grease manufacturers and chemists throughout the years, but I prefer the food analogy and the gravity jiggling effect. And do always read the manufacturer's recommendations as they are the true experts on the subject of their products.
